    Substantial impacts of subsistence fishing on the population status of an Endangered reef predator at a remote coral atoll

    Napoleon wrasse Cheilinus undulatus has declined drastically throughout most of its range, owing, in large part, to overexploitation. In Anaa, French Polynesia, the species is harvested as part of the subsistence catch by fishers using rockpile traps, spearguns, handmade harpoons, and baited handlines. We sampled 70 Napoleon wrasse captured by artisanal fishers of Anaa between 2015 and 2018 to assess the status of this population, and we applied data-poor fisheries models to assess the stock status of this iconic reef predator. The species was determined to be overexploited at a rate of 0.82 based on values of natural (0.14; Hoenig method) and fishing (0.58; difference of total and natural mortality) mortality as components of total mortality (0.72; Beverton-Holt estimation). The left-skewed length distribution (mean = 36 ± 13 cm SL) suggested an under-representation of large adults in the population, which would predominantly be terminal males in this sequentially hermaphroditic protogynous fish.     Being relevant: Practical guidance for early career researchers interested in solving conservation problems

    AbstractIn a human-altered world where biodiversity is in decline and conservation problems abound, there is a dire need to ensure that the next generation of conservation scientists have the knowledge, skills, and training to address these problems. So called “early career researchers” (ECRs) in conservation science have many challenges before them and it is clear that the status quo must change to bridge the knowledge–action divide. Here we identify thirteen practical strategies that ECRs can employ to become more relevant. In this context, “relevance” refers to the ability to contribute to solving conservation problems through engagement with practitioners, policy makers, and stakeholders. Conservation and career strategies outlined in this article include the following: thinking ‘big picture’ during conservation projects; embracing various forms of knowledge; maintaining positive relationships with locals familiar with the conservation issue; accepting failure as a viable (and potentially valuable) outcome; daring to be creative; embracing citizen science; incorporating interdisciplinarity; promoting and practicing pro-environmental behaviours; understanding financial aspects of conservation; forming collaboration from the onset of a project; accepting the limits of technology; ongoing and effective networking; and finally, maintaining a positive outlook by focusing on and sharing conservation success stories. These strategies move beyond the generic and highlight the importance of continuing to have an open mind throughout the entire conservation process, from establishing one’s self as an asset to embracing collaboration and interdisciplinary work, and striving to push for professional and personal connections that strengthen personal career objectives

    Behaviour and survival of wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar captured and released while surveillance angling for escaped farmed salmon

    In many Norwegian rivers, spawning stocks are surveyed for escaped farmed salmon with surveillance fishing by rod and reel after the recreational angling season. However, the benefits of surveillance fishing depend on the ability of wild salmon to return to the spawning stock. To evaluate the impacts of surveillance fishing, we captured, radio-tagged and released wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the River Lakselva, Norway, in a surveillance fishery occurring just prior to the spawning period.     Envisioning the future of aquatic animal tracking: Technology, science, and application

    Electronic tags are significantly improving our understanding of aquatic animal behavior and are emerging as key sources of information for conservation and management practices. Future aquatic integrative biology and ecology studies will increasingly rely on data from electronic tagging. Continued advances in tracking hardware and software are needed to provide the knowledge required by managers and policymakers to address the challenges posed by the world's changing aquatic ecosystems. We foresee multiplatform tracking systems for simultaneously monitoring the position, activity, and physiology of animals and the environment through which they are moving. Improved data collection will be accompanied by greater data accessibility and analytical tools for processing data, enabled by new infrastructure and cyberinfrastructure. To operationalize advances and facilitate integration into policy, there must be parallel developments in the accessibility of education and training, as well as solutions to key governance and legal issues

    Conservation physiology of animal migration

    Migration is a widespread phenomenon among many taxa. This complex behaviour enables animals to exploit many temporally productive and spatially discrete habitats to accrue various fitness benefits (e.g. growth, reproduction, predator avoidance). Human activities and global environmental change represent potential threats to migrating animals (from individuals to species), and research is underway to understand mechanisms that control migration and how migration responds to modern challenges. Focusing on behavioural and physiological aspects of migration can help to provide better understanding, management and conservation of migratory populations. Here, we highlight different physiological, behavioural and biomechanical aspects of animal migration that will help us to understand how migratory animals interact with current and future anthropogenic threats.     The quest for successful Atlantic salmon restoration: perspectives, priorities, and maxims

    Atlantic salmon is often a focal species of restoration efforts throughout the north Atlantic and it is therefore an excellent case study for how best to design programmes to address and mitigate threats and correct population declines. This perspective is written to promote the work that has been accomplished towards restoration of Atlantic salmon populations and synthesize how we believe the lessons can be used effectively to support efforts by management agencies to restore populations. We reviewed where restoration is needed for Atlantic salmon, agreed on definitions for three levels of successful restoration, and then applied these criteria to 49 published papers focused on Atlantic salmon restoration. We identified 16 successful examples of restoration among 49 papers reviewed and discussed what interventions led to success versus failure. We then addressed key questions about when hatchery stocking should be used as part of a restoration measure and whether local restoration efforts are enough when these wide-ranging species encounter broad-scale changes in the north Atlantic, specifically related to issues of climate change and to marine survival. We advise to avoid restoration as much as possible by protecting and managing existing populations and when restoration is necessary, problems should be identified and addressed in partnership with river users. With appropriate resources and research to resolve ongoing mysteries, restoration of lost Atlantic salmon populations is absolutely feasible

    Existing health promotion messages and advice on smoking cessation focus upon the negative aspects of continuing to smoke and contrast these to the benefits of giving up. Benefits of cessation are invariably linked to reduced risks of illness and disease with the process of cessation framed as a largely positive and certainly a health enhancing one. In this paper we present an analysis of data from a cross-sectional, exploratory study in the city of Aberdeen, Scotland, undertaken with 54 people, aged 18-44, who are or have been smokers. The multiple and often contradictory agendas of everyday life, smoking and health are explored. Participants spoke of the dangers of smoking and the potential benefits of giving up as these are considered by health promotion and medical research. However, many smokers experienced a number of benefits from smoking (such as socialising with others and breaks from boredom), and health and social problems with the process of cessation (for example, weight gain, stress, colds, flu). Participants appeared to query the validity of the risks of continuing to smoke and yet indicate a range of health and social difficulties in giving up. The authors assert that an acknowledgement of the attractive, pleasurable aspects of smoking may be seen as unacceptable and irresponsible but this could well provide an opportunity to relate to the everyday and multiple practices of smoking and smokers themselves as illuminated by this research

    Observations of Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) bycatch in a recreational ice fishery in northern Ontario

    Bycatch in fisheries is a well-explored topic, although less so in recreational fisheries. We encountered frequent bycatch of Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus), a neotenic aquatic salamander that is active in winter, in passively baited ice-fishing gear targetting teleost fishes. We noted hook location in Mudpuppies captured by two hook types: J-hooks and circle hooks. Our prediction was that circle hooks would reduce the frequency of deep hooking of Mudpuppies, which is often cited as an important predictor of post-release mortality in fishes. We found no difference in the frequency of deep hooking of Mudpuppies captured by circle or J-hooks, although, in a subset of Mudpuppies (n = 13) held for 24 h after capture, one death occurred (8%). Further research may be necessary to determine whether deeply hooked Mudpuppies can pass or shed hooks and survive beyond the 24-h period we monitored. However, our findings suggest that anglers and managers should consider refinements to handling practices for Mudpuppies captured as bycatch, because they are likely to survive if handled cautiously. These results, which are among the first describing non-fish bycatch in recreational fisheries, call for managers and anglers who encounter Mudpuppies during recreational fishing to seek more information and educational opportunities to improve the fate of this important component of temperate freshwater ecosystems and ecological indicator species that is incidentally captured by ice fishing
